Should You Choose Selldone Instead of Shopify? [Shopify alternative]

Finding the right Shopify alternative has become much harder than it was a few years ago. Shopify still dominates the eCommerce industry, and for good reason. It’s reliable, scalable, and trusted by millions of merchants around the world. But after spending more than eight years working in eCommerce marketing, I’ve learned that the most popular platform isn’t always the right platform for every business.

I’ve worked with startups launching their first online store, established brands migrating from WooCommerce to Shopify, and businesses trying to reduce operational costs while improving SEO and conversions. One question comes up repeatedly.

“Is there a better alternative to Shopify that doesn’t require so many apps and ongoing maintenance?”

That question is what led me to Selldone.

Unlike most Shopify like websites, Selldone isn’t trying to become another version of Shopify. Instead, it takes a completely different approach by building an all in one Business OS where many tools that normally require third party apps are already included. After spending time exploring the platform, I realized this wasn’t just another eCommerce builder. It was solving a problem that many small businesses experience every day but rarely talk about.

Shopify Is Still Excellent, But It’s Not Perfect

Before discussing Selldone, it’s important to be fair.

Shopify remains one of the strongest hosted eCommerce platforms available today. It powers more than 5.6 million live online stores, offers thousands of apps, and has one of the largest developer communities in the industry. If you’re building a large brand with custom requirements, Shopify is still difficult to beat.

However, popularity doesn’t automatically make it the best choice for everyone.

From my experience, most small businesses don’t leave Shopify because they’re unhappy with the platform. They start looking for an alternative of Shopify because running the store gradually becomes more complicated than they expected.

The challenges I see most often

  • Monthly app costs continue to increase.
  • Managing multiple subscriptions becomes part of the daily workflow.
  • Simple features often require another plugin.
  • Business owners spend more time managing software than growing their business.

None of these issues make Shopify a bad platform.

They simply highlight that different businesses have different needs.

Why Selldone Caught My Attention

When I first heard about Selldone, I honestly expected another low cost Shopify competitor.

Instead, I found something different.

Rather than encouraging merchants to build their store around dozens of third party applications, Selldone focuses on reducing software complexity. CRM, CMS, inventory management, customer management, automation, marketing, and content publishing are designed to work together inside one platform.

For experienced developers, that might not sound like a major advantage.

For non technical founders, it can completely change the experience of running an online business.

The question isn’t whether Selldone has more features than Shopify.

The real question is whether you actually need another app every time your business grows.

Comparing Selldone and Shopify Beyond the Feature List

Most comparison articles between Selldone and Shopify focus on feature checklists. You’ll usually see a table comparing payment gateways, themes, pricing, or available apps. While those factors are important, they don’t tell you what it’s actually like to run a business on either platform.

After working with different eCommerce businesses for years, I’ve found that the biggest differences usually appear six months after a store goes live. That’s when merchants begin adding marketing tools, automation software, customer support systems, analytics platforms, and inventory solutions. The platform you choose today affects how easily those systems work together tomorrow.

Neither platform is objectively better. They simply solve different problems.

The Biggest Cost Isn’t the Monthly Subscription

One mistake I see many first time store owners make is comparing only the monthly subscription price.

For example, Shopify’s Basic plan may seem affordable at first, but the platform itself is rarely the biggest expense. As businesses grow, they often install separate apps for product reviews, email marketing, upselling, subscriptions, loyalty programs, advanced search, analytics, and customer support. Each app solves a specific problem, but together they increase both monthly costs and operational complexity.

Selldone follows a different philosophy. Instead of building an ecosystem around thousands of third party applications, many everyday business tools are already included inside the platform. That doesn’t eliminate every additional cost, but it significantly reduces the number of services most small businesses need to manage.

Why This Matters for Small Business Owners

During the past eight years, I’ve worked with founders who wanted to sell products, not manage software.

Many of them weren’t interested in comparing twenty review apps or testing different email marketing platforms. They wanted a system that worked from day one without spending weeks configuring integrations.

That’s where I think Selldone has a genuine advantage.

The platform reduces the number of decisions a business owner needs to make before launching a store. Instead of asking, “Which app should I install next?” the focus shifts back to products, customers, marketing, and growth.

For non technical founders, that’s a meaningful difference.

One Insight Most Reviews Don’t Mention

Most people think Shopify’s biggest strength is its app ecosystem.

I agree.

But that strength can also become a weakness depending on your business.

Every additional app introduces another monthly subscription, another support team, another software update, and another integration that could eventually break. None of these problems are serious on their own, but together they create something many businesses underestimate: operational complexity.

Selldone approaches the problem differently by keeping more essential tools inside one ecosystem. You may have fewer apps to choose from, but you’ll also spend less time connecting software and more time running your business.

That’s a trade off every business owner should consider before deciding which platform is the better fit.

How Does Selldone Perform for SEO?

SEO was one of the first things I checked while testing Selldone. The platform includes the essentials, such as clean URLs, customizable meta titles and descriptions, image optimization, structured product pages, and a built in blog.

Those features provide a solid foundation, but like any platform, rankings still depend on your content, site structure, and SEO strategy rather than the software itself.

Where Shopify Still Has the Advantage

Selldone impressed me, but Shopify still leads in several areas. Its biggest strength is the ecosystem. With thousands of apps, themes, developers, and integrations, Shopify offers far more flexibility for businesses with advanced requirements.

If your store depends on custom workflows or enterprise level integrations, Shopify remains the stronger choice.

Who Should Choose Selldone?

After testing the platform, I don’t see Selldone as a Shopify replacement. Instead, it’s a great fit for entrepreneurs who want a simpler way to run their business. If you’re launching your first store, have limited technical knowledge, or want fewer apps and subscriptions, Selldone is definitely worth considering.
